The Birthday Present

My firstborn has been asking for a sewing machine for about a year now. She recently had a birthday and grandma decided to buy her a machine.

She just turned 5 and I know this will create a LOT more work for me but it is something just her and I can do together. And we need that. Since she threatens to runaway all the time.

Since the machine was already bought I decided to make her a sewing kit. I added the basics and even with those, just a few necessities to get her started. I put a flower shaped felt piece inside so her pins and needles had a place to go. And I only gave her a few, so we didn't have to worry about finding them all over the house.
Then I tucked them away in the pockets. The crayons above are fabric crayons. I have never used them but supposedly you color on paper and then transfer it to fabric. Sounds like an awesome project for a 5 year old!

And of course I had to applique it. It seemed like a pretty lame thing to give her after she opened the machine but she loves to get it out whenever we sew so I think she likes it!

Wow, what a GREAT idea! I love it! My daughter is 4 and she got a super beginner sewing machine for her birthday from her Grandma as well. The box says "Singer Chainstitch Sewing Machine" and it is REALLY basic. We haven't tried it out yet, saving it for a rainy day. :o)
